Show Your Coworkers You Care

Last month we asked you to tell us the best way to show your coworkers a little love. While the minority chose small gifts, the majority chose words of affirmation, with sweet treats falling in the middle. No matter how you choose to show your coworkers some love, the ultimate goal is to help your colleagues feel special and valued. Here are some small, but mighty ways to make someone’s day.

Be Authentic

Before you can make your coworkers feel special, you have to get to know them! It’s important to remember that in order to develop a relationship beyond the surface level you need to get to know someone beyond their job title. Ask about their interests and passions outside of the office, their hopes and goals moving forward, and if there’s anything they’re currently struggling with. By getting to know someone holistically, you’re creating an authentic relationship and in turn will learn small ways to make their day a bit brighter.

Offer a Helping Hand

No matter your position within the company, it’s likely you’ve struggled with your work before, whether it was coming up with new ideas or finishing a project on time. If you notice someone who looks like they could use some assistance, don’t hesitate! Offer advice, a listening ear, or your time if you’re able to help them complete the task or work through the issue at hand. While sometimes you may not be able to do anything to resolve the issue, they’ll know you care and are there for them.

Be Appreciative

In a hectic workplace, it can be challenging for everyone to receive the recognition they deserve for their hard work. If you notice someone did a great job on a presentation or project, send them a text or an email letting them know how much you enjoyed it! If you have the opportunity to give them a shout out in a meeting, that is also a great way of letting them, and those around you, know how hard they worked. While these actions may seem small, they can make a big difference in helping your colleagues feel valued.

Perform Random Acts of Kindness

Sometimes making your coworkers feel special means performing random acts of kindness. Try bringing in some sweet treats to the office, or grab coffee for a coworker you know is working hard on a project. You can even take it a step further and offer to mentor a new colleague.

In the words of Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Keep these tips in mind and help make your colleagues’ day a little better and a little brighter.
